Hi, I’m Kinny!
I’ve been a word nerd for as long as I can remember, but my path to creating Check-mate Editing wasn’t a traditional one, but I feel like that’s actually my superpower!
Before launching my business, I spent years in the healthcare sector as a Project Analyst in a hospital’s Project Management Office. With a degree in Health Studies from York University, a Project Management Certificate from the University of Toronto, and formal training in Leadership & Inclusion from Centennial College, my whole career has been built on two things:
Human empathy and a keen attention to detail.
As the go-to editor for my friends, family, and every team I’ve ever worked on, I realized something simple: turning messy, first drafts into clear and compelling narratives has never felt like "work" to me.
It’s what I love to do.
Today, I combine my project management background and my love for storytelling to help authors, creators, and business owners organize their thoughts, refine their words, and publish work that they are proud of!
How I Protect Your Work
When you trust someone with your writing, you’re trusting them with your hard work.
I approach every project with three simple principles:
Absolute Kindness: Creative work is vulnerable. Whether you’re sending over a rough first draft of a fantasy novel or a scrambled weekly email, there is ZERO judgment here. I’m in your corner to help, not to critique.
Voice Preservation: A good editor shouldn't make your writing sound like a textbook (or like them!). I help clean up the mechanics, remove (or add) commas to smooth out sentence flow, but your personality will always remain front and centre.
Seamless Collaboration: There’s no complicated tech or ticketing systems here! We communicate simply and directly, whether that's working inside trackable Google Docs suggestions or sending a quick text update over email/WhatsApp.
